As many of you know, Stan and I recently moved into our newly built home with my mother and we couldn’t be more excited! It’s bittersweet because we lost my father right before the move and he was looking forward to enjoying this beautiful home. However, I’m so grateful to have my mother downstairs so I can see and spend time with her every day. The house has three floors, and my mom has her own space on the first floor with a full bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and laundry. The top 2 floors are for Stan and myself, and is so much larger than our old NYC apartment. Almost 4x the size to be exact. Eek! For that reason, decorating will take a long time and I’m not in any rush. I want to find pieces that I enjoy and create a space that I love.
The only room I decorated in NYC was our family room/dining room because that is where we spent most of our time. The bedroom was small and not a priority for me in terms of decorating. However, when we moved into this new home, the bedroom was the first place I wanted to work on! While it’s not complete by any means, I wanted to share the progress so far. I purchased the bed first and worked around that since I wanted it to be the focal point. I looked for quite some time to find nightstands that would fit in the remaining space since most of them were too wide and would have run into the bedroom door. These mirrored ones were perfect and fit the space. After those two purchases, everything else began to fall into place.
I wasn’t going to decide on any art above the bed until much later down the road, but I remembered that we had purchased this great NYC map during our trip to Charleston. When I went online to the site to look at getting more prints, I saw there were other cities and I knew it would be the perfect addition above the bed. I picked NYC for obvious reasons, Washington D.C. because it is the city closest to where we live now and San Francisco because Stan lived there in his early 20’s. I loved that the pieces meant something to us and were not just random for the sake of taking up space.
We still have to finish the room with a dresser and perhaps a small sitting area, but for now I love how it feels so cozy and inviting. I often spend my days working from the bed and the room is so bright. If you follow me on Snapchat (@alittlebitetc), you will see that we have three huge windows in the bedroom that overlook a nature preserve behind us. Since we are on the third floor of the house, the view is really beautiful and great to wake up to every morning.
The next room I plan on tackling will be my office and I have some fun ideas for that! You can also follow me on Pinterest to see more of the items I am thinking about getting in the future. Hope you enjoyed this post!
