I love to change up my makeup look just a bit each season. Normally summer is a time to embrace all the golden and bronzey things, but I myself am loving a sheer pop of color on the lips. Something hot pink, cherry red or coral worn in a toned down way is perfect for the hot summer weather. I’ve been playing around with the products I have in my makeup collection and came up with a handful of lip colors and lip combinations that I plan to wear all summer long. All are still super wearable for daytime and pair well with a ton of different eye and cheek looks. Here are my current favorite summer lip colors and lip combinations.
Best Summer Lip Colors
Tarte Maracuja Juicy Shimmer Glass Lip Plump in Rose Shimmer Glass
The texture of these shimmer glass lip plump is similar to the original Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lips and give you that intense moisturizing and lush formula. The shimmer can definitely be felt in this new version but it’s very slight and does not bother me. This is my favorite shade of the ones I have tried and the most neutral lip color in this list. The shimmer is intense but doesn’t feel too gritty on the lips. I absolutely love the way it makes my lips look especially in the sunlight. Buxom Full-On Plumping Lip Glow in Cherry Popsicle
This is a plumping lip serum designed to give a hint of color and a bit of shine and moisture. Honestly the formula is ok in my opinion but this particular color is the absolute PERFECT sheer summer red to layer under any gloss. It gives a pop of red that is reminiscent of it’s name – cherry popsicle.
Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm in Pink Sugar
They are incredibly creamy, smooth and nourishing with a unique blend of vegan waxes while the tinted versions give the smallest hint of color to the lips. Pink Sugar alone doesn’t give much pigment but I love layering it over a brighter lipstick or lip liner to add moisture and sheer out the color to be more wearable. They are great worn alone for a no makeup day but also layer perfectly over a lip liner or lipstick for an added bit of shine and moisture. Compared to other lip balms I have, these are definitely one of the best in terms of keeping my lips nourished most of the day. Hourglass Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balm in Entice and Lucid (discount code: MAREE)
The Hourglass Glossy Balms are richly pigmented but feel very comfortable with no stickiness or tackiness. The color range is stunning and the plumping effect is minimal so there is no discomfort. It’s hard to even pick a favorite shade at this point because I love and wear almost every color. A creamy and hydrating formula that glides effortlessly on your lips. They stay quite glossy and smooth on the lips and don’t bleed or feather. For the summer, I highly recommend Entice (a bright vibrant raspberry) or Lucid (a bright coral) to give your lips a pop of color. Since these are sheer in nature, the color is not as bright as it looks in the tube but you can apply one swipe to give just enough color. Jones Road Lippie Stick in Flushed
These are the closest thing you will get to a traditional chapstick but with more color. They are easy to throw on and go, adds a bit of moisture to the lips and can easily be reapplied throughout the day. Most of the colors are very sheer and natural but if you want something with a bit more pigment, I recommend Flushed. It gives the lip a bright pop of pink without being too much.
Patrick Ta Major Volume Plumping Lip Gloss in Full Syringe
The Patrick Ta Major Volume Plumping Glosses are a high shine and hydrating plumping gloss designed to make the lips look fuller, poutier and more voluminous. There are two different types of formulas – sheer and rich in the range. Some colors have shimmer and others are a cream flat finish. These are definitely a thicker type of texture so they are a tad sticky when you apply. The pigment on the rich shades are quite intense and really deliver a great color payoff. Because of the thicker nature of these plumping glosses, they do last longer on my lips than other similar formulas. Full Syringe is this sheer jelly red that is the perfect topper to any bright lip you apply underneath. (Full review with swatches of all the shades I have are in this blog post)
Flyte.70 S+S Lip Sheer in Kid (discount code: Maree15)
Out of this entire lip of lip tints, these make my lips look the smoothest and minimize fine lines. The formula is incredibly nourishing and the color range is wearable but definitely still gives a healthy dose of pigment. The entire Flyte.70 line is formulated to be suitable for all ages but they especially target more mature skin types and concerns. That is why I absolutely LOVE these because the smoothing effect they give the lips is beautiful! Kid is a vibrant Raspberry that when applied looks much more subtle on the lips but still instantly brightens up my face when I wear it.
Too Faced Kissing Jelly in Sour Watermelon
Sheer jelly red glosses and lip oils are my go-to this summer for adding a bit of shine and gloss to a bright lipstick or lip balm, but the sheer nature of the gloss will also sheer out the lip color underneath. Instead of amplifying, it manages to sheer it out in the best possible way. This Too Faced Kissing Jelly has a ton of fun colors in the range but my favorite is Sour Watermelon – a sheer jelly red.
Tatcha Kissu Lip Tint SPF 25 in Plum Blossom
The Tatcha Kissu Lip Tints SPF 25 are a creamy, hydrating lip tint with SPF 25 and buildable color. They are an extension of the uber popular Tatcha Lip Mask, which I have and love. The pigment is so much more rich than I imagined and really give amazing color payoff on the lips. They feel super smooth and moisturizing and hardly at all like a traditional sun product for the lips. Plum Blossom is nicely pigmented and gives a rosy tinge to the lips which looks great worn alone but I personally love adding a sheer red lip oil or gloss on top to amp up the vibrancy. Clarins Lip Comfort Oil in 04 Pitaya
The Clarins lip oil is comfortable and super hydrating giving just a hint of color of the lips. Shade 04 Pitaya looks really bright in the tube but comes out much more sheer when on the lips. It is the perfect topper and makes the lips look glass-like and juicy.
Best Summer Lip Combinations
While all of the colors I shared look great on their own, I personally love wearing many of them together and creating combinations that look great for the summer. A wearable bright pop of color to the lips that looks great with a ton of different makeup looks. I created these combinations and wanted to share them in case you are looking for a new lip look for the season.
Which combination or lip color is your favorite?!
