Dark circles and bags under the eyes are some of the biggest complaints that people have when it comes to their skin concerns, especially as we age. Covering dark circles on mature skin can be more challenging than on younger skin. Common concealer techniques on younger skin can actually emphasize wrinkles or create a cakey looking appearance if not applied correctly on mature skin. To help navigate this, I am sharing a guide on how to properly cover dark circles on mature skin.
How to Cover Dark Circles Under Eyes on Mature Skin
The under-eye area changes as the skin matures becoming more thin which will show dark eye circles more prominently. Using standard concealer techniques often does not work for mature skin so it’s necessary to update your routine with age. Covering dark circles on mature skin is less about using more makeup and more about using the right techniques. There are a ton of home remedies that people may share, but ultimately there are proven techniques and products that can help minimize the darkness under your eyes. It’s important to focus on hydration, lightweight products, and targeted application which can make a noticeable difference in how the under-eye area looks and feels on mature skin.
What Causes Dark Circles Under Eyes On Mature Skin
- Thinning skin revealing blood vessels
- Loss of collagen and elasticity
- Hyperpigmentation
- Dryness making shadows more visible
- Lifestyle factors such as lack of sleep or dehydration
- Genetics
What Do Dark Circles Look Like On Mature Skin
- Bluish or purple tones from visible veins
- Brown pigmentation from hyperpigmentation
- Hollow or shadowed areas from volume loss
How To Cover Under-Eyes Dark Circles On Mature Skin
Prep the under-eye area with a hydrating eye cream. Allow it to fully absorb before applying makeup.
A lightweight gel or serum with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and caffeine are the best option for helping to intensely hydrate and reduce puffy eyes each morning. This is my current favorite eye gel to use every morning.
Apply a color corrector if needed. Use peach or orange tones to neutralize blue or purple darkness.
You can use a color corrector in conjunction with your concealer. Apply your color corrector first just on the area that is dark rather than covering the entire under eye.
Use a lightweight, hydrating concealer. Avoid thick or matte formulas that can settle into lines.
This can definitely take some trial and error to find a concealer that works but I am sharing the best concealers for mature skin further down in this post.
Apply concealer sparingly and focus on the inner corner and darkest areas rather than covering the entire under-eye.
Less is definitely more when it comes to concealer. Start small with just a tiny dot where the darkest part is and blend out. Add more if needed.
Blend gently using a sponge or fingertip to avoid tugging the skin.
Try a tapping or dabbing motion to blend rather than swiping or tugging.
Set lightly with a small amount of finely milled powder if needed to prevent creasing.
Once again, this will take some trial and error to find the best setting powder for mature skin that doesn’t emphasize fine lines or texture.
What Is The Best Under Eye Concealer For Mature Skin
Sarah Creal Face Flex Concealer & Complexion Enhancer
The Face Flex Concealer gives medium coverage though can easily be sheered out by applying a smaller amount. For me, it is the perfect amount of coverage and manages to look absolutely flawless on the skin. It gives a nice natural finish that mimics the look of real skin. It’s truly beautiful.
Natasha Denona Hy-Glam Brightening & Hydrating Concealer
This is formulated to be a serum-like concealer with medium to buildable full coverage. You can instantly feel the serum texture as soon as you swipe it on the skin. It’s incredibly creamy, hydrating and smoothing yet still covers anything and everything I need. It contains biomimetic pigments and texture-perfecting microspheres which gives it a flawless and slightly blurring aspect.
MAKE Beauty Skin Mimetic Concealer
Another serum concealer that I instantly impressed me and would be perfect for dry, textured or mature skin. It provides light to medium coverage in a serum-like consistency with a radiant dewy finish. While it’s somewhat buildable, it’s not meant to be full coverage. The formula has skin mimicking pigments so it does blend in effortlessly and lasts nearly all day.
RMS Beauty Revitalize Hydra Concealer (discount code: Maree-15)
The Revitalize Hydra Concealer is a medium coverage hydrating concealer with skincare ingredients. It blends like an absolute dream, doesn’t emphasize fine lines and LASTS ALL DAY! This is one of the longest wearing concealers I have ever tried. Another distinguishing feature of this concealer is the small brush applicator which is different from many traditional doe foot applicators. I love how precise you can be with the brush as it allows me to spot treat areas easily.
ILIA Beauty Skin Blur Serum Concealer
I’ve only been testing this concealer for a short time but I had to include it in this list because the formula is that impressive. This is a true blurring formula that gives medium coverage with a satin finish. It gives a soft focus like look to the skin which is perfect for those with texture or fine lines.
How To Prevent Concealer From Creasing
Use minimal product
Less is more when it comes to concealer and you should only focus it where you have darkness.
Avoid over setting with powder
A very light dusting of pressed powder or setting powder is all you need to fully set your concealer. I personally like to use a powder puff and press the powder gently into the concealer. If you feel that you applied too much, you can always spritz a hydrating spray over your face to add some moisture back in.
Blend quickly before product settles
Depending on the concealer formulation, many self set and may not require any powder to increase longevity. But the downside to that is you have to blend almost immediately after applying to ensure your concealer doesn’t set.
Focus powder only where needed
Only apply your powder where you put concealer rather than under you entire eye area.
