As someone who wears makeup almost every single day, the way I prep my skin before applying makeup can be as important if not more than the actual makeup I wear. Especially as I get older, my skin is drier, has more texture and makeup will not last on my skin if I don’t properly prep before. The main focus for me when prepping my skin before makeup is hydration. Making sure my skin is well moisturized is the main key for how well my makeup will go on and how well it will last.
You can obviously attribute your makeup performance to your overall skincare routine, but there are a few products that I can use that will instantly prep my skin for makeup. And sometimes my skincare routine could be working well but that particular day my face could be drier than usual so I will reach for one of these products to help it immediately.
My Favorite Skin Prep Products
Rhode Glazing Milk
This is a lightweight milky essence to prep the skin for product absorption, boost barrier function and provide instant hydration. The Glazing Milk contains a mix of ceramides, a magnesium + zinc + copper blend and beta-glucan to help soften and moisturize the skin. It also helps to reduce redness over time. This is a product that would be great for all skin types and any age which is why I love it so much. It’s an easy product to fit into any skincare routine. Because it’s so glowy and hydrating, it preps my skin SO NICELY and my makeup applies flawlessly. Especially on the days when my skin is looking very dull, I will press a think layer of this into my skin right before I put on foundation. It adds moisture and a bit of fresh glow to my skin and helps the makeup blend more evenly.
Colleen Rothschild Sheer Renewal Cream
This cream was one of the first products I ever tried from Colleen Rothschild and what made me fall in love with her products. I have been using this oil-free cream for nearly 10 years. It’s a lightweight gel-cream that helps to hydrate and smooth the skin so I prefer using as a daytime moisturizer and it’s perfect for the heat and humidity. It wears beautifully under foundation and preps the skin so nicely. Even though it is oil-free and feels like nothing on the skin, I still find that it moisturizes deeply and keeps my skin hydrated all day long.
Peach & Lily Glass Skin Veil Mist
I like to use a facial mist in my skincare routine every day but I particularly like this one from Peach and Lily because it gives my skin a boost of moisture without being too heavy. Certain foundations that I have may be a drier formula and so I will apply the foundation all over the face, spray this mist all over my face and then finish blending the foundation into my skin. The added bit of moisture from the mist helps my foundation blend better and look more skin like. I will also spray it over my entire face after my foundation is finish and dab a damp makeup sponge all over the face to really help the foundation melt into the skin.
