If you have been following me for a few years, you know that I was not always a huge jewelry lover. I would wear pieces here and there, but never really jumped head first into a full jewelry wardrobe for my everyday outfits. Fast forward to now and it is obvious that I have left that mindset behind. LOL I LOVE wearing jewelry every single day and one of my favorite things to do has been to layer my necklaces. More than any other jewelry category, necklaces make one of the biggest statements in your outfit. And layering necklaces can be a fun way to add tons of color and texture to your look. Especially with simple outfits or outfits that are monochromatic, adding layered necklaces can instantly elevate your look and allow you to showcase your personality in a creative way.
It can be a bit confusing to figure out how exactly to layer necklaces but once you play around with it, it gets easier and easier each time. Here’s a few of my tips on how I layer necklaces and a guide on how to layer necklaces effortlessly.
How to Layer Necklaces
For me, learning to layer necklaces has been a trial and error process. I usually just mix and match different ones until I find a combination that I like. But there are certain ways to layer that I have adopted over time so I thought I would share some of those different ways with you.
Stick with one metal
I love mixing gold and silver but it can often add more confusion so I usually stick with one metal when I am layering. Either all gold necklaces or all silver necklaces.
Choose varying lengths
To create a cohesive stack, it is a good rule of thumb to choose necklaces that are not the same length. Over time and as you get more comfortable with layering, you can stack necklaces of the same length but as a beginning step it’s best to choose ones that all vary in length.
Keep the lengths close together
An easy way to layer necklaces is to choose ones that all have a similar length but get slightly longer each time. This creates a cascading effect that looks effortlessly chic. When there is too much of a gap between layers, it can look a bit mismatched.
Choose delicate styles for a simplistic cohesive look
If you want something that doesn’t really stand out but rather is an easy to wear stack that works for more outfits, choose delicate chain necklaces and/or charm necklaces. When you add in chunkier and more textured styles, it will stand out a bit more and be dependent on the type of outfit you are wearing. If you choose simple dainty styles and layer them in varying lengths, it will be an easy look that you can wear with almost any outfit.
Mix textures and colors
To create a more bold statement, mix and match delicate styles with chunkier pieces. Be sure to choose necklace lengths that vary to give the cascading illusion of the necklaces draping down your decollete.
8 Necklace Layering Ideas
Mixing colors and textures with necklaces
(top left) – Initial necklace (code: MAREE20) and turquoise beaded necklace (code: MAREE20)
This is kind of a great “go big or go home” kind of necklace stack. LOL Layering textures and colors all in one look. However, I still tried to match the stones of the initial necklace to the stones of the beaded necklace to create a cohesive look.
Stacking 4 necklaces together
(top right) – Scorpio pendant necklace, Gold beaded necklace (code: ALITTLEBITETC), turquoise beaded necklace (code: MAREE20) and scorpio pendant necklace (code: MAREE20)
The main focus of this necklace stack is layering the lengths of all the necklaces and keeping them close to each other. This a waterfall like effect that looks really great when worn with a v-neck or button down blouse.
Cascading necklaces
(bottom left) – Pearl necklace (code: MAREE20), pearl with round clasp necklace (code: MAREE30) and paperclip chain necklace
A perfect example of choosing necklaces to layer where each one is a big longer than the last. Additionally I kept each style similar in terms of thickness which again makes it work so well together.
Layering necklaces all in the same tone
(bottom right) – Gold beaded necklace (code: ALITTLEBITETC), pearl necklace (code: MAREE20) and bubble initial necklace (code: MAREE20)
If you want to introduce another texture besides metal in a necklace stack, choose something that is in the same tone. The other two necklaces in my stack are gold and they pair well with this beige and pink pearl necklace.
Layering chunky necklaces
(top left) – Scorpio pendant necklace, pearl with round clasp necklace (code: MAREE30), puffy heart necklace
When layering chunky necklaces together, one option is to vary the lengths so they create that cascading effect. Additionally, I like to wear a small dainty necklace as my first layer and then add the chunky necklaces.
Mixing two necklaces with opposite textures
(top right) – Chunky chain necklace (code: ALITTLEBITETC) and pearl with round clasp necklace (code: MAREE30)
If you have two statement necklaces with similar texture, you can layer them close together to create the look of one single statement necklace. In this look I am wearing a chunkier chain necklace that is similar in width to my pearl necklace so they layer seamlessly when worn together. It also helps that they are a similar length but still have a slight difference so you can still see each necklace.
Layering with a pendant necklace
(bottom left) – Chunky chain necklace (code: ALITTLEBITETC) and pendant necklace (similar)
A style that is always an easy look to pull off is layering with a pendant necklace. Choose a simple pendant necklace that is going to be the longer style in the stack and then layer it with a chunky larger necklace that is shorter. Many brands actually make necklaces in this style on the same clasp so you can purchase it already styled like this. But I find that this look works well for wearing everyday but also as a statement piece when worn with a simple outfit.
Mixing two similar chunky necklaces

When you have a higher neckline and not a ton of room to show off long necklaces, it can be fun to layer two chunky or beaded styles together to create a larger necklace look.
